How to make a (unfinished) Showreel

A showreel has the function of presenting one's own skills in a short form. For many people, it is a showcase for their own work and more or less a moving business card.

It is important that the showreel does not only communicate on a visual level. As a motion designer with a technical focus, my way of working is not directly communicable through color schemes and grids.

The solution-oriented thinking and the search for the core of the topic should therefore come across. Hence the idea to build the video in the form of a short film, as the core plot the problem to create a showreel and all the struggles it inherits.

This showreel is currently work in progress. But the real question may be: 
Will it ever be finished?

The fear of the blank, white sheet of paper arises from a well-known problem. A certain fear of not being able to see anything interesting or simply not discovering anything valuable. Maybe it was the last creative and good idea? Maybe one is simply not made for it after all? Creativity is something fundamentally great, but if you challenge it, the confrontation can take a lot of strength.

The film is about quietly listening to the struggle. The chaos in the person's mind is embodied in an abstract world told on the basis of patterns and noise.

Pattern and noise are identical from a biological perspective. Noise is always present and organisms interpret it to then find patterns that are recognizable to them. The subjective approach and the realization that creativity is identical was very purposeful for the project. With that, the plan was developed to focus on "finding in the chaos" from a visual, aesthetic, and thematic standpoint.

The art and style have been shaped by the team's insights and personal influences. All the departements focused on the feeling of "being there in the head" and therefore help to visualize the process.

Beyond the film, working on a meta-level was also a challenge of the process. Thus, the work was very open and the creative process was constantly questioned. If you want to learn in depth about how the team tackled these problems, you can take a look at the links below!

This experimental short film follows in the footsteps of Escher's work and explores its interpretation in today's world. While Escher's work is based on analog techniques, today the means are expanded by a multitude.

Nearly 100 years later, it is not uncommon to use computers to generate images and entire works of art using only a mouse and keyboard. With the challenge of translating Escher's thoughts and working methods into the digital medium, a deep examination of why he fascinates so many generations as an artist emerges.

Escher's penchant for mathematical, meticulous work has been used as a model to build a systemically functional world reminiscent of a diorama.

I’m a Motion Designer from Germany.
I like to solve problems and create art in unintended ways. My work is often based around programs and using them in creative ways.

I don’t want to restrict myself to a specific medium, as I like to work analogue and digital. Movies, VR, games – it doesn’t matter. The most important thing is, that it’s something new and fascinating.

Besides all the creative stuff, I like to do sports, mountainbike, pet dogs and play videogames.
