Description

My favourite game is Super Smash Bros. Melee released in 2001 by Nintendo. It’s a platform fighter and is played on the Nintendo GameCube.

The controllers aren’t that ergonomic though, & I’ve developed hand pain over the years. Other people have reported hand pain too & after some time they have built alternative game controllers to combat that problem. The b0xx is the first controller & one of the most famous examples.

Living in Germany, it’s kind of difficult & expensive to ship such a controller from the United States & as an additional problem they were sold out for the unforeseeable future, accompanied with a waiting list.

Therefore I started my 3d printing journey and bought an Ender-3 & some filament. I then designed my own version based on the Fake1, a self made version of the Frame1.

I redesigned the form factor, as I wanted to easily throw it into my backpack, but didn’t want to sacrifice ergonomics. It was designed in Houdini & set up in a procedural matter, to quickly iterate on layouts.

When finished, I called it Fake1s & posted it on Crane’s Lab Discord - a community dedicated to controller mods and self made input devices.

Here you can see the final look & the button layout. It’s a compact form factor & allows easy portability with good ergonomics.

This is the wiring part - not the most beautiful, but it does the job neatly! The Arduino firmware can be found here!
